Do I need to buy a cot yet, or should I just get the Moses basket to start with?

The decision of whether to go for a cot or Moses basket can be hard. It will depend on the amount of space you have. And where you plan for your baby to sleep. A Moses basket has the advantage of being small, so the baby will feel snug and more likely to settle sooner than in a cot. It also means that your baby can sleep beside you while you are in your own bed. Some models come with a rocking motion, which is great to rock your baby to sleep while you can also remain in bed. One of the disadvantages will be that your baby will grow out of the Moses basket at about six months. Once he/she starts to sit up, there is a danger that the baby can fall out of the Moses basket, as the sides are low. At some stage you will have to buy a cot. Your baby will look very small in the cot and he/she may feel less secure. You also need a big enough space to have the cot; ideally this should be in a nursery, or baby’s bed room.
