I’m 42 and starting IVF – What are my chances?

The older a woman is, the less likely she is to get pregnant: This is the same fact whether IVF is used or natural conception. Information from National Institute for health and Clinical excellence (NICE) suggests that:

  • For every 100 women who are 23 to 35 years old, more than 20 will get pregnant after one cycle of IVF treatment.
  • For every 100 women who are 36 to 38, around 15 will get pregnant
  • For every 100 women aged 39, around 10 will get pregnant
  • For every 100 women aged 40 or over, around 6 will get pregnant

Similar figures have also been quoted by The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). They report that success with IVF treatment is as follows:

  • 28.1% for women under 35 years old
  • 21.9% for women between 35-37 years old
  • 17.5% for women aged 38-39 years old
  • 10.4% for women aged 40-42 years old
  • 4.2% for women aged 43-44 years old
  • 1.4% for women aged over 44
