I am taking prescribed drugs. Is it unsafe to continue breastfeeding?

There are many substances which are known to pass through into the breastmilk. Drugs are one of these and often the drug companies do not have enough research to say whether or not it is a safe product to recommend for breastfeeding mothers. Different drugs pass through in different amounts and the benefits of breastfeeding need to be weighed against the potential risks of continuing, it is very dependant on which drug you have been prescribed. You can ask your midwife, or the doctor who prescribed the medication, also there is detailed information about drugs and breastfeeding via the Breastfeeding Network website (see helpful links).
