Is it OK to exercise if I'm breastfeeding?

Yes, as long as the exercise is not too strenuous. Try to avoid exercises that make your breasts sore or tender and it may be helpful to exercise after feeding your baby. This will ensure your breasts are not feeling too full or uncomfortable. There is a small body of research that suggests babies do not feed so well when fed immediately following their mothers undertaking exercise. It is not known exactly why although some reports suggest it may be an issue of ‘taste’. It is suggested to wait about one hour following your workout before breastfeeding – if practical.

If you are exercising on a regular basis, wear a supportive bra. Your breasts will have changed during pregnancy so you will most likely need to be re-measured. A good -fitting sports bra may provide more appropriate support. You may also find that you need to wear breast pads.
